JUST PART OF A DAY'S WORK

I entered the coffee shop as always – love this place! A sheriff’s deputy was ahead of me-no worries. I am a law abiding citizen. I pay my taxes, I park between the lines. It’s all good.

He ordered his coffee and the cashier said “You’re good-all first responders are paid for-courtesy of anonymous donors.” What? Oh my goodness that’s fantastic!

What is the definition of a First Responder? “a person with specialized training who is among the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency, such as an accident, natural disaster, or terrorism.” Yep-a sheriff’s deputy definitely qualifies. I have to say I just love this! As a mom of an Army soldier I think all these people who have a higher calling than me I have to say thank you! Yes please get free coffee-that is absolutely the least we can do for you. And yet they are always so embarrassed.

Each of these first responders seems so humble, so embarrassed, so reluctant to take the gift. This reluctance just cements my enthusiasm that they are entitled. The fact that they feel unworthy propels me forward to celebrate their worthiness. I am so grateful that they feel they are unworthy. I don’t think I would run into a burning building to rescue strangers. I don’t think I would charge into an unknown situation to try and arrest the villains of this world. My intuition is to run away from danger-not towards. Yet these brave men and women don’t see it this way. They feel this is all part of a day’s work.

I am eternally grateful to these brave people-you may not think you’re brave but you are in my book. A cup of coffee is the absolute least I can do for you.
